I personally prefer not to house any cichlids because I hate how they are so territorial. Are viejas very aggressive? Or are tey peaceful like severums are

Verry aggro......maybe a uaru is more for you.....

They can be aggressive. Not as aggressive as some of the Napdopsis species but still aggressive. The Regani. Synspillum and the Heterospilum are some of the mellower Vieja but even these are somewhat uppredictable and you just never know how they will do in a community tank. You should stick with the Severum types if you like mellow.

They seem like they can be aggressive, especially in a smallish aquarium. There is probably some variation from species to speces. I've kept 3 species before; blackbelts, synspilums, and reganis. I found the blackbelts and syspilums to be pretty aggressive, not as nasty as a midas or trimac, more along the lines of a Texas Cichlid. Quite capable of inflicting casualties in a smaller aquarium, but if given enough room tend to calm down somewhat.

Reganis tended to be quite a bit mellower in my experience. They were at the low end of the pecking order in a mixed cichlid communty I had. But it was a fairly aggressive mix.

mine is very aggressive... she has killed one of my aro. I keep her in a 90g now. she pushes large rocks around fighting w/her reflection...

bifasciatum and maculicauda are pretty mean, synspilum less so in my experience. Not at all like severum though. I had a bifasciatum, 9 synspilum and a trio of nicaraguense in a 225 and there was no aggression ever. It was very surprising.
