how aggressive are vieja

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a Vieja Syn in a 180 CA/SA that I had set up. He was the king of the tank. Very aggressive. I made the mistake of adding a Blackbelt (Vieja) way bigger than the Syn on a Friday, then went away for the weekend. When I came back the Blackbelt was beat to near death in the upper corner of the tank. The Syn was still nipping at him. I took him out and put him out of his misery.

female blackbelt staked out a flowerpot in my 220 then proceded to murder any potential mates
:) unless you mush em up in one tank like mbunas
the principle is one fish doesn't get picked to death
in practice.. have a plunger handy:ROFL:

They can be very aggro, especially conspecifically. Either do one or many in a large tank. They do tend to do better if raised together from small sizes, but even that is not a guarantee.

mine is very aggressive... she has killed one of my aro. I keep her in a 90g now. she pushes large rocks around fighting w/her reflection...

she's purdy :D

I have 5 Bifa I caught awhile back and they are absolutely evil. But I think a couple are starting to pair up. Either that or their best friends. I dont know how to sex them.

I've had a male argentea only 2inches kill 2 other argenteas 3 haitensis,3 spinossums in a 55 grow out tank in 1 day. so he gre out until 6 inches & I gave him to my friend who kept him with 2 ,12-13 inch red pike cichlids & a 12 inch managuense. Veja are hostile but I think agrentea, maculicauda are the worst I ever owned. Regani & hartwegi are mean but at least other fish can live with them.

IME Vieja and Paratheraps are among the meanest of the central americans. even more than the piscivorous guapotes (except for the dovii).

Is yours a Hartwegi, or do all Viejas look similar?
