I got them from a vending machine selling bait in a completely air and water tight Styrofoam container. Right now they are in a 5 gallon. How can they survive in there though?

Maybe added that day to the vending machine. Never knew they added fish to vending machines.

It is a very lonely vending machine. They were refrigerated down to the 40s°F. The machines seem to be more common around fishing destinations. They also had bigger ones.

what are they?

They look to my untrained eyes to be rosy red minnows.
Perhaps they change the cups out daily?

if they are able to gulp air like carp or beta family oxygen would not be that big of an issue for them.

They are rosy red minnows. It would not make a difference whether they could breathe air because the containers were completely sealed. Thats why im curious how they are able to survive in these vending machines that dont seem to get much maintenance.

Ive seen these bait buddies and other similiar "supplements" for keeping fish alive during tournaments but never the o2 tabs for shipping. That article says the guy services the machines 3 days a week to change the water. A properly bagged fish with o2 will last 48hrs+ no prob so its not that surprising. The cold temp helps alot also. Pretty cool if the "tabs" work just as well as an o2 tank. Id guess its more of a sedative/water supplment tho like "ship safe" powder or we'd hear more about it in the hobby for shipping.
