How bad are Goldfish when it comes to keeping a take clean?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think pound for pound they are about average. Granted they are heavy feeders but their diet should consist of a somewhat lower protein base and that should lessen nitrate footprint. Although compared to neon tetras, they're quite messy

one think goldfish constantly dig in the gravel which helps clean it as some fish never touch food once it falls from the top of the water line.

as with any other fish, its going to come down to stocking level; and planned water changes. Usually problems are only encountered when people try to stuff large fish into small tanks, a la Oscar Cichlid; which necessitates having to change ridiculous volumes of water in order to try and keep levels healthy.

Just give the goldfish adequate room, filtration; and water changes, you'll be golden.
