How bad are tiger barbs in shoals?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ACWO: Great looking set up as always. Love to see schools of most decorative fish. I love the bottle collection in the window as well. Pretty cool set upwith the CO2 also. Are you going to plant heavily in that tank? It would be killer if you could. But that's your decission not mine. Hope it all works out well for you.

GSM: Hey man that's really great. Nice to see I'm not the only Tiger Barb fenatic around here, but I can't set my tank up for a while. I think I already told you about those circumstances. My L.L. is a real jerk! I love the photo of your Blue Rams as well. Those are another favorite of mine. Great photo's btw. Thanks for sharing. I do appreciate it.

Thank you and yes it is going to be fully planted, going to try to grow a complete carpet and am putting in some ludwigia repens, and the xmas tree moss needs to grow in on the wood. My fixture isn't working right now so I can't grow a lot of stuff... have to take it in to a local electrician to get it fixed. After that I was be cranking the co2 and doing some serious growing.,

Nice barbs, both of you :)

I have 6 tiger barbs in a tank with an oscar, two convicts and a firemouth and they don't go after any of my fish. They're really nice dither fish.

No problem :)

I have a shoal of 9 tiger barbs in my 180 gallon tank (5 regulars and 4 albino). They live perfectly fine with all 7 of my angelfish including 3 veilfin koi angels, 1 gold veil, 1 wild scalare, and 2 black lace. I have never had tiger barbs nip the fins on other fish. Just start with a large, odd numbered shoal, add them with either fish that are bigger than them (i.e. adult angelfish), or with fast moving/inconspicuous fish (the other tankmates include 5 bala sharks, 3 Giant Danios, 10 Corydoras, 10 Assorted Rainbowfish [including splendida, boesemani, and trifasciatus] , and a rainbow shark) . I used to keep tiger barbs with my peacock eel (before he decided to slide through the overflow :irked: ) and also kept them with blue gouramis, platies, swordtails, and a variety of cichlids and the barbs never nipped any other fish. I treat them like I treat my school of yellow tailed blue damsels in my 187 gallon saltwater (i.e. odd numbered shoals of 7+ )

fishfreak2009:

You keep ALL of those fish in your 180 gal? How do they all find space to swim? And with the Barbs of all things? How do they . . . how are they able to be passive and tollerate each other with out getting into a hostile disagreement? This answer I have to know. It just doesn't seem to be feasable to do. I didn't say it wasn't possible, I just find it unbelievably astonishing.

I got 6 in my aquarium and they leave everyone else alone but each other. Ill see them chase each other around and occasionally Ill see a fight between my two larger ones

Dude a 180 is a decent size tank and the fish he has are small except for the bala sharks which will get 14 inches.

I know a 180 is a decent sized tank for the fish he was mentioning. I personally own a smaller but yet decent sized tank also. I was just amazed about how docile they have been in his community tank of fish. Taking into account the type of fish he owns and their potential adult size, I was just surprized by what he stated he has and the quantity. I'm also quite certain he has done his homework in the 1 gallon per inch of fish rule, so I was not doubting his knowledge or indicating he was overstocked. As I said, I was just amazed and surprized by the number, quantity and potential size of his stock.

In closing, my name is not Dude. There are no U's or E's in my first name. I would appreciate it if you would make note of this, and in future posts, to please address me by my first name. I thank you for your anticipate compliance to this request and I hope you have an enjoyable week.
