What is the gape like on these guys? I want to figure out where the tankmate/prey delineation is so I can start planning my stock.

About the size of it's head. However there are other fish out there that a delhezi or any other bichir that will take down doesn't if it's bigger or about the same size.

Don't mix anything that have skittish movement as bichirs are attracted to it and will just take it down during lights off by doing a death roll.

Thanks, King-eL. I haven't seen a delhezi in person so it's a bit hard for me to judge it's head size; my impression is that it's about the size of a man's two thumbs held together- is this close?

I have lost a 2.5" paraya, and 3-3" bass to my ornate if it helps you out. He ate the 3 bigger bass and left me with the scrawney one:(. But the cut off right now is about 3.5" on the bass cause he hasn't ate anymore in a month.

edit... He ate the paraya at about 6".

I see that a lot of people keep mixed-species groups of Polypterus. Besides avoiding keeping fish of different sizes together, are there any other things to keep in mind when mixing species? I'm thinking specifically of mixing P. delhezi and P. teugelsi. Also, is a 75 gallon tank adequate for a total of three fish of those two species?

Thanks, 118. I think if I do end up getting bichirs I will keep them in a bichir-only tank.

I think you should. But if you want other fish in there beside bichirs, try tp avoid adding slender fish, skittish moving fish, small cigar shape fish or small elongated fish. Also small fish that is about the size of it's head as I said before.

Thanks, King-eL. 118, I didn't see that you had edited your post. You don't think a 75 gallon is adequate for those fish? Do you think it would be enough for just a pair of P. delhezi? I already have the tank. If it's not big enough for two P. delhezi I'll just stock it with some other kind of fish.

Also, does anyone know if P. delhezi can hybridize with P. teugelsi? I don't want to breed them together, I want to make sure it won't happen accidentally if they are in the same tank.
