So this is what I was thinking, a big outdoor pond where I could grow coldwater monsters like the Wels catfish and Sturgeon and giant Carp.... What sort of dimensions do you think you'd need?

I almost got sturgeon but my pond is less than 1000 gallons. I think 5000 was recommended and it would be better if it were round since they like to constantly circle. I dont know about the dimensions. Big and round.

If you wanted Wels Catfish, your probably going to need half an acre+. Do you want to pay the bills for a fish like this?

Yeah, errr, I think that'll be my sons worry, lol... What 60yrs to that size...They'll end up on the barbie before then too lol! whats half an acre in feet or meters?

50m by 25 ish?

I've got 0.8 hectares, out the back. I wouldnt even consider digging one that big though... Better of buying a pond. There a lots of lakes here as its a mining area. If that was dug 2m deep it would be 4 1/4 million US Gallons... is that not a little extreme given gigas can be kept in 150,000? In fact its bigger than the lakes they live in naturally here! They dont get anywhere near the size of the photos mystic posted...those are from southern europe where the weather allows them to grow all year. They have been living wild in the UK for 100 odd years and the UK record is 62lbs!!!!

My pond isn't huge, not sure how many gallons it holds... But its like a circle shape and measures 9ft from side to side, its quite deep around 5 feet.

My sturgeon is pretty big now around 3ft, ... He never seems to go down deep, always at the surface, but he's constantly swimming round and round... I think a wide pond is important for these guys, but depth, I think even if it was 18" deep they'd be more then happy.

i noticed the sturgeons seem happier in slow running water also.... They really are a joy to keep though, cos they always moving and very active generally and relatively easy to tame, they really liven up a pond. Koi are beautiful but the sturgeon is the real star, a joy to watch.

Ps.

King Edward, just realized your in London also. If you wanted to come and see my setup before you start building yours, you'd be more then welcome.

I also have a swimming pool pump that I could do you cheap/trade if your on a tight budget.

I'm currently Campaigning in scotland...this rebellious mob need putting down again, I'll give 'em independance...independance from the troubles of this mortal world... CRY HAVOC...!!!

But I'll be back in a few months...(shouldn't take too long, they're already bickering among themselves...again!) <lol>. Love to come round and see your pond then. Those Sturgeon must look awesome. I thought you would hardly see them, like catfish! Do they leave the koi alone?

Ahahahha sounds like your having lots of fun in bonny scotland!

Let me know when your back, the offer will still stand! Just bring the biscuits and I'll make the tea...lol

I had the koi way before the sturgeon arrived and at first I was a bit cautious with the koi being so bloody expensive and the sturgeon looks like a bit of a predator! But I was pleasantly suprised...

When I fist got him, he was a bit shy and you'd see little of him, but after just a few weeks he was eating from my hand etc, he's so gentle and playful you'd be amazed, you can put your hand in the water and splash about and he'll come and rub himself on your hand, let you stroke him etc...

Some of my koi cost a fair few quid (hundred's) the sturgeon was 47 pounds, and he's my most prized fish by a country mile!

Planning on building a larger pond in the summer, and having no koi but a few sturgeons and some native UK fish.... tench, grass carp, trout, bream ,chubbs, perch, everything but the pikes... (I do want pikes so badly, but not much of a community fish) hehe

I wouldn't advise getting any cat fish, like you say you don't see much of them (if anything). My mate bought some sort of albino catfish, lovely looking fish and cost him a bomb, but you might see it for a few seconds in a whole day! I have some loaches that are pretty big, well they were last time I saw them (like a year ago!!!)

My next pond build I'm thinking nice and big maybe 16ft by 8ft... But very shallow 3ft maximum.... only problem with shallow is you will need to have net covering cos those damn herron's and hawks will be regular visitors (i have a cure tho, discuss on pm) lol
