I've got 0.8 hectares, out the back. I wouldnt even consider digging one that big though... Better of buying a pond. There a lots of lakes here as its a mining area. If that was dug 2m deep it would be 4 1/4 million US Gallons... is that not a little extreme given gigas can be kept in 150,000? In fact its bigger than the lakes they live in naturally here! They dont get anywhere near the size of the photos mystic posted...those are from southern europe where the weather allows them to grow all year. They have been living wild in the UK for 100 odd years and the UK record is 62lbs!!!!

See your looking at it wrong...

0.8 hectares available.

minus 0.15 hectares for W/D filter / sump.

minus 0.10 for Bog / refugium.

total available pond is only 0.55 hectares.

Way more acceptable now that you have it in perspective huh? :D

And if the old addage where true about fish only growing to the size of they're tank...think how big your koi would be! :headbang2

Maybe you should look at Peter McFarlane pond first ;).

And quit aggravating the Scotts, we got enough problems with people that tank funny, y'all.

My pond isn't huge, not sure how many gallons it holds... But its like a circle shape and measures 9ft from side to side, its quite deep around 5 feet.

My sturgeon is pretty big now around 3ft, ... He never seems to go down deep, always at the surface, but he's constantly swimming round and round... I think a wide pond is important for these guys, but depth, I think even if it was 18" deep they'd be more then happy.

i noticed the sturgeons seem happier in slow running water also.... They really are a joy to keep though, cos they always moving and very active generally and relatively easy to tame, they really liven up a pond. Koi are beautiful but the sturgeon is the real star, a joy to watch.

I love the way you think dude! I'll have to teach my sheep to swim:ROFL:! Koi that big! It would be fantastic...I could rid one! Ohh, thats it...thats how I'm getting RICH....THANK YOU DR JOE....check this out...London Sightseeing tours down the thames...yes, yes, I know they already exist...BUT NOT OFF THE BACKS OF GIANT KOI!!!!!!! 'A Unique Perspective on a Unique City...Only with AquaTours' NO More traffic jams...NO more speed limits...NO more congestion charge...catch me if you can Ken...catch me if you can!

If you really think it needs to be that big, I wont bother digging one... The Farmer next doors got a old quarry lake that has nothing in it.....YET. I'll have to have a word see if he'll rent it to me...Its 30m deep...so they say!

And quit aggravating the Scotts...

The handy thing about scots is they come out the box pre-aggravated. The key to sucessful scots husbandry is learning to direct that aggravation in a constructive direction, in fact the common scot (Scotus Angerous) is only truely happy when able to display his natural tendancy towards aggression, and if you wish to see them at their most colourful you should provide a habitat that facilitates this. Feeding your scot a natural diet is thankfully very easy, copious amounts of alcohol will readily be accepted followed by anything deep fried (pizza is a favourite)! And please, only one scot per enclosure, while they can be maintained in larger groups a constant focal point of mutual aggravation must be CONSTANTLY PRESENT. Even a momentary failure to maintain this will result in the group turning in upon itself and the loss of many of your scots. While group behaviour is interesting to observe, this should be left to the professionals...
