How big a tank for a single fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have my Anostomus gracilis in a tank alone (20G). The fish is evil and eats the fins off of any fish kept with it; I could probably keep some small barb/danio-type fish with it but cichlids are a no-go and any catfish/pleco would be dead in a day, this fish has killed (by de-finning) 2 cories and a channel cat. When I set up the big tank next spring I'm tentatively planning to add a 55G planted refugium; I'll try keeping the gracilis in there but with my luck it will eat the plants faster than they can grow...damn fish. I love it.

Almost all my fish are singles in their tanks. Frontosa in a 55. Peacock Bass in a 45(he is about 3 inches). Same size flowerhorn in a 55. Snapping turtle in a pool. Anything I am trying to grow out goes in a single tank. I know what I like about the single tank. Although I do the same weekly water changes, I think the water quality stays way better. In the event of a power outage(which seem to occur alot around here), your fish can survive for days. I think that this is a more natural environment for fish. You don't see large groups of predatory fish as a rule in the natural environment. Obviously, agression is eliminated and you can get spectacular fin and body growth. There is great beauty in a heavily stocked tank, but a lot more opportunity for agression and water degradation.

Begining the process of building a 170 US gallon indoor mini pond for 1 Asian arowana. Well I might add something else for company...
