One thing I dont understand about when they say canisters spew out nitrates, how? I havent heard about this in freshwater, is this a SW thing?

For those ur gonna need ateaslt 180 gal, a buddy of mine has 5 different triggers and 3 different puffers in the same tank(300gal). His clown trigger is appox 15" and was tank raised.

would a canister suffice?

yeah man a canister would be fine , i would only use it as a mechanical and chemical filter not as a bio filter.. let the rock be the bio and the skimmer get rid of protein after all we are talking only one trigger rigt

Yea my empty 50 gal is going to be only a growout tank for one trigger as I stated, since I would be getting one small, i would eyeball guess that I would have a year or two until they can even reach the width of my 50. I'll have a bigger tank up and ready by then.

my very first trigger was a undulated.. i grew him up in a 30 gal for about a year...then moved him to a much bigger tank..i did not use rock and i only used a under gravel filter... i was to do the same again i would use live rock and no UG filter..using the canister as a mechanical and or chemical i might do tho with a skimmer as we said before

Im not sure of the exact science behind it but as far as i know the cannisters work well turning the nitrite into nitrate but then cant break down the nitrate properly and it ends up biulding up. They can do it fine to start with but because they are a closed system the crap builds up in there and unless its cleaned out regularly they just cant handle it.
If you where getting an undulate i think a 4x2x2 would be fine for it for life if it was the only fish although a 180 would def be better for it. For a solo clown 180 minimum and whatevers up from that would be better (not up on your US gallon tank sizes).

Triggers are gnarly fish....are there any that are brackish or freahwater?
