how about instead of how big of a tank do i need first y not ask if that combo would work? ur answer to that question is no. dont get the florida gar(u wont get a spotted. 99% chance its a florida)

Supposively yes as I was looking into one and asked in the Gar boards about tankmates and everyone tells me when the Gar reaches adulthood it will eventually eat everything. Mostly on Alligator Gars though but Idk about spotted or floridas.

aro and gar bad combo, as well as pbass and gar and sometimes(not all the time but sometimes) even ray and gar are bad tank mates

and crazy, its not only for the aggression from the gar it also has to do with the feeding aggressiveness and the spooking of gar causing it to sometimes break its back or not get enough food

Actually have heard that before, and it has kept me from owning a gar. Alot of misconception in the aro forum, you'll have dozens of people telling what a great combo it is in their 125g tank

Thanks for a clearer explanation. Learn something new everyday from this site. MFK FTW Anyways I still want a Gar but I don't know if I'm willing to get rid of all my fish just for one. Maybe one day I'll turn my 225g into a Gar tank but I already have future stocking plans for it.

gar r best with other gar and bichir. there r other tankmates that work but those tend to be the best

Thanks for the info guys. Sadly I am stuck with the gar as Australian Law has made them illegal so had to get a liscence for him (stupid Australian Government!!!!). Anyway so no matter what gotta keep him. At the moment he is getting on fine with the aro's and ray but if anything starts to go wrong I will remove anything that is causing problems. The cats i listed a while ago were when I was thinking of a few different tank set ups and trying to decide which (if I am thinking of the right post).

Tank size wise, 10x4x2.5 was my ultimate goal so by the sounds of things this should be fine for them thankfully.

The peacock bass number im not set on and still not sure whether I will get them. Just looking for something to make the middle of the tank a little less bare and want to stick with the south american/ american theme. If anyone has any suggestions would love to hear them. Sadly many species arent available in AUS so gotta keep that in mind.
