My Spotted (that is a Florida) passed 12" in four months and thats not uncommon!
They grow real fast upto 14", then the growthrate slows down a bit.
But still you need to be prepared for bigger, say a tank that is at least 2' from front to back.
The Gars hard scales make it hard to manouvre, so the size of your tank should be appropriate.
