How big can oscar get

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm going to call BS on anything over a foot unless I see a picture of the fish on a tape measure. Probably the most frequently over-exaggerated fish, I've heard hungred of claims of 14-16"+ oscars in my 10+ years in the hobby, but never once seen a genuine photo of one with a ruler/tape, and I'm going to remain a total sceptic until I do.

The oscars in that video look big, but there's nothing in there to show scale and they could just as easily be a solid 12" as 17" or whatever was claimed....

Yeah, I was pretty skeptical at first, too. Then I realized how tiny their eyes look, how tall their bodies are and how they move. They look like geriatric hubcaps! I have never personally seen an Oscar with that height-to-length ratio. Some of those guys are almost round!
It is a zoo and zoos are (sometimes) known for taking good care of their specimens. After comparing thousands of photos of Oscars ( I hunt down new Oscar pics every day. It's an obsession.) I would put a lot of money on those being at least 16" and most likely larger.

I have a 14" male Tiger Oscar. Bruce! (Big boy for sure, lol) They can get over 12", but normally the females wont. I've got a 12" female Common Oscar in a different tank.
