time, space, food (quality and the fish's willingness to eat), and good genes are all important factors. when the factors are right, 20"-24" on average, which end of the spectrum depends on how aggressive it feeds etc. At ~18", its growth would generally be quite slow, but with time it'll push to the range mentioned, and can get bigger if in a huge tank or pond, provided it's a greedy eater

oh yes he is the Boss but there is another catching up fast that he seems to like.They are always side by side.
