how big in a year?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
mine went from 1.5" to almost 21" in the first year. Now it's been a year and 2 months and he's nearing the 24" mark. That's with several stressfull tank moves, a bout of fin and tail rot he had when I purchased him, a heater crash where I lost my big jau, and also the jau kicking the crap out of him and tearing all his fins all to hell. So in perfect conditions probably looking like it can do better than mine did lol.

that a crappie story, but a 300gal will be good for 1 RTC for 2 to 3 years?

2ft at least in the first year.

what are the dimensions of the 300 ? Should be fine for a while

As I always say the foot print is more important than the total gallons for a RTC, Also bank on the range which everyone has mentioned of 18-24" in the first year. There are cases of smaller ones and also of larger ones but it's a safe bet that you'll have one that falls within these typical ranges.

The 300 Gallon Rubbermaids are being used succesfully for multi year homes but are in no way going to be a suitable life time home in most peoples opinion. Filtration is also going to become an issue with the 300 gallons as the larger the fish the more water you want to dilute the pollution created by it... which you can overcome by having a good filtration system with redundancy built in (I prefer to have 3 seperate systems running to ensure that the failure of one doesn't cause much of a swing in water quality (not ideal for everyone but in my case I have had to many close calls to consider anything less)

I say grab it if your really planning on housing it got life.
