Basically I rent where I live, I really have no idea how long I will stay where I'm at either. I don't really mind the work involved in moving the tank with me when I leave, but I don't want it to be unrealistic either. What size tank would you say is the largest you would get if you knew you would eventually have to move it? Basically I want to set up an Amazon type tank with pbass (2 or 3 of them), so I know I will need at least 100 gallons. Give me your thoughts.

I would not bother...when you moove leave the tank and get a new one..Price of transport and the hassle more than pays for your peace of mind a new tank..

IMO

What do you mean by price of transport? I would move it myself. I have no plans to leave town, I just know I wont be staying here forever, if I move it will only be a few miles away.

It all depends on what you can handle in weight. I sold my tanks that were over 365 gallons since I know I can handle the weight of my 365s and below by myself. It's NOT easy or fun but, I can manage them.

I have a 55' that I have moved several times and it has never been a problem. A 55 is 48" long...I would say that any tank 48' wont be a problem so you can do a 100 because they are only a few inches wider and taller.

I also have a 6' 150G tank that I bought used that I moved with just one other guy. Upto 180G two guys can handel it, so the problem is not the size of the tank its the effort and if your willing to break it down, nothing to worry about. (you might want to worry about the floor being able to handle it)

good luck with it, and let us know what you end up doing.

If you have about 4 or 5 helpful friends or ones that are easily convinced with pizza and beer (after the tank is moved of course) a 300 or 360gal shouldn't be huge hassle.

anything above 265 would probably be ridiculously hard to move. a 265 is still VERY heavy. Do you have stairs to contend with. If you're talking like 4th floor apartment then it depends on how many strong friends you have to help you. About the biggest you can do stairs with two people would probably be 125 but that is not big enough at all for a pbass unless you plan on upgrading. Acrylic would make it easier but more expensive. Other than weight you just will have to make it sure it will fit through doorways. I think a tank the size of Uhauls biggest truck may have a hard time doing that.

You can move a 365 gallon tank by yourself? Not only are you the fish master but you must be the incredible Hulk too :D lol the biggest tank I have ever picked up by myself was a 90.

Kind of joking I'm assuming you mean with a dolly or cart or something ;)

Yea getting some very large friends to help move it is no problem at all. No stairs to contend with either. I kinda figured it wouldnt be too big of a problem, just wanted some other opinions.

While we're on the subject, what process would you guys go through to move such a tank? Complete water drain and start over when it goes to the new home? Transport the fish into smaller containers with bubblers using water from the tank, then just replace them once the tanks at the new place? Obviously do a thorough cleaning and water change right before the move to avoid kicking up any crap that may be in the substrate. I donno, I'm rabling, lol. :headbang2
