I have a 16 inch channel cat in my 150 gallon (72"x18"x27"). He can be somewhat aggressive but for the most part is a great cat. I got him about 5 - 6 months ago when he was about 4" and he has grown pretty rapidly. He is in with a pair of Oscars, Severum, and a smaller cat. I just wanted to know when should I remove him and let him loose in a pond. I have a friend with a pond on his property that gave me permission to release him into when the time comes, so now I just need to know when I do it. I really like him and have him trained to eat out of my hand, so I'd like to keep him as long as possible. He has grown to the size he is very fast, and don't know if he will keep up this rate of growth or will it slow down. Any info or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Well, if you tank is 27'' wide, when he's three or so inches longer he should probably go.

If you really wanted, he could stay until he was bigger....

Well the problem is the tank is 27 tall, 18 wide, he is about two inches short of being as loing as the tank is wide, thats why I am asking now before he gets large enough to have problems turning around.

You will know when its time. He wont be able to turn around soon. That is how I knew it was time to move my ID shark. Catching him will be fun. Good luck.

Thats kinda what I figured, I thought I would know when it was time. I have a feeling that catching him will be easier that I first thought. I have a large peice of PVC pipe in the tank that he lays in, it is about 20 inches or so. He is in that pipe at almost all times when it's light out. I figure I will just wait till he is in the pipe and then cover both ends and remove the whole pipe and place him in the cooler I am going to transport him in, just hoping it is going to be as easy as I think it will be.

An update on this, I went ahead and moved this cat out of the tank. It actually was as easy as I thought, I waited till he was in the PVC pipe, covered both ends and removed it and then dumped the cat into a large cooler filled with tank water. The move went very smoth and now I miss him, but he was just getting to big for the tank.
