How big is your Gold Nugget Pleco (L18)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I see another Pleco in the back ground. I heard they are territorial toward other plecos. Do you have problems? I would like to add another species once I get a larger tank.

Yes he was aggressive to similar sized plecs, although not overly aggressive, just very intolerant. I believe this is quite common with Baryancistrus.

I have 2 for the past 3 years. Both are about 3" never grew. Im thinking I lucked into some kind of dwarf variety. Wish I knew that then would have got a bunch and tried to breed them. Pretty sure these are both female.
Best looking and most active plecos I own.

The reason why you don't see many big GN in captivity is because most don't live to make it that size. They're not particularly fast growing plecos, and they're notorious for dying for no apparent reason. I've seen videos in Brazil of fisherman pulling out 12"+ L81's.

I always thought they stayed a little smaller around 6-7". I have one now but its only about 3.5" now. Mine is pretty shy too. Only comes out for food and hides when I walk by.

what do you feed your gold nugget pleco's. Mine is housed in a 265g all male hap/peacock cichlid tank. Tank raised from local breeder, that went out of business. Mine has stayed small probably around 4". I have had him for around a year and he has only grown about an inch. He has plenty of hiding spots, plenty of driftwood and nobody bothers him but he seems to be a very slow grower. Unless I'm not feeding him correctly

Thats the thing with gold nugget plecos. With some of them, their growth rate is just not there. The big ones are usually very old fish. Their life span is pretty long, but they tend to die off first when it comes to any problems in the tank. I'm currently raising mine in my 210 african tank and hes about 7" now. I have had him for a few years now though. They need a lot of room and a lot of time to get to those huge sizes. All of my plecos get spectrum thera A and now a food from xtreme called catfish scrapers.
