good call but most good lfs will take them off your hands and give you store credit. and if you just enjoy growing something out and getting a ny juvi when they outgrow there tank thats understandable as long as your not trying to make cash out of the deal. its like buying a fish once and insted of it dying on ya you can get a juvi trade in and only have to buy one fish insted of lots over time.

That is considering you have a LFS that will deal with you. they should b/c in the long run if they can get rid of it they will more then likly get a pretty penny out of it.

that pretty much sums up what I was going to do, except instead of a lfs, it is a friend

you can get a 10-14" peacock bass in their, and it will live, well ive had mine in my 150 for years they grew to 14" and then just started getting really fat, i have a wet n dry filter and rarley ever do any water changes, like i said the peacocks have lived in their for quite sometime now and they love it.

Width and Overall size of a fish is a touchy topic-I personally believe a 20 inch P. Bass would be fine in a 18 inch wide tank-we are not talking about submarines here-it is not like the fish can't bend-now if you want to put a 30 plus inch Arowana in a tank that is 18 inches wide then the fish will be very uncomfortable and probably die. I think we have to use good judgement and base it on the fishes level of energy-A lot of people put Oscars in a 55 gallon and it works cause their level of energy is low-the same can't be said for a fish like an Arowana that is in constant movement.

I'm sorry but the width of a tank should always be longer than the length of the fish. All fish keepers should provide a good home for their fish and not just the bare minimum for it to survive. Correct me if I'm wrong but this is what I think is reasonable as far as tank sizes.
12" fish - 18" width
18" fish - 24" width
24" fish - 36" width
36" fish - 48" width
I'm pretty sure very large fish will have more momentum when turning so would probably end up bumping heads on glass in a tight space.
Hope this helps.
As far as the pbass goes I would only get them if you have at least a 6x2x2 and there are a few local fish keepers able to house them when they are bigger ie over 18"

Doesn't the above highlighted contradict each other. you say a 16" fish tops in a 18" wide tank then go onto saying that your tank should be at least as wide as the length of your fish. which would mean that a 18" fish could go in a 18" wide tank.

The guideline is the absolute minimum. But I guess, you're right.

Again, my point is, all this is common sense.

I am not planning to keep these guys for life. I was thinking how large they could get before I have to get rid of them sorta thing.

From 2 inches to time you would be really stressed on keeping would be between 16-24 months. Around that time you will have already been thinking that your tank is too small and start feeling like a dic. Females could technically be kept longer as they seem to grow slower than males.. This is not a definite though ;)

What size Cichla are you thinking of picking up to put in that tank?

your tanks width should be longer than the pbass length.
they need alot of room.
its fien to keep one until it outgrows the tank, but make sure someone wants to take it when its big.

Tim-quick question how many people on this forum alone do you think keep fish in which the width is smaller than the fish? Let me rititerate we are not talking about Submarines here-the fish can still turn and live comfortably-How do I know-I have had Dovii and Umbee in my 240 gallon for years and never had problems-same goes with P. Bass that I have had in my 125 gallon tank And your point is a little odd what is the big difference between an 18 inch wide tank and a 24 inch wide tank -6 inches-Wow! what a world of difference.

Tim-funny thing is years ago I had the same philosophy you did-and it wasn't til personal experience and talking to others on this forum and others that I changed my philosophy.
I know of a guy who comfortably keeps a Male Umbee in a 190 gallon tank-check out www.thecichlidscene.com.

so, you're saying it's OK to keep an Oscar in a 10 gallon, right?
