How big of a tank can I get with $500?

Depending on where you could get a 150-180 gal tank here.

I just recently got my 180 with stand, canopy, 55 gl sump, overflows and plumbing for $450 off of CL.

Look around the buy and sell section of this site. Sometimes you can find a good deal on a complete setup with filters and all. What part of Ct. are you from? Petco and Petsmart dosen't sell anything over a 75 gallon around here. I got my 220 from a small lfs.

In cali, you see plenty of ads for tanks around 100-200 gallons with all the corals and rock for bout 500 bucks. People with money will purchase nice tanks, and lose interest real quick, and thats where you come up.

I paid $580 for my 135gal glass tank. that was just for the tank(no top, stand or anything) i had to purchase everything seperate. and that was the cheapest way i could go. around here $500 might get me a 55-75 gal fully set up. so anything bigger than that would be a steal to me. I would shop around classified adds for a secound hand tank like others say and you could get a considerably larger tank. I think you could get a fully set up 180 if you look around.

depends on what if any accessories/stands/etc you want with it. but tank/top/stand/light only new probabbly a 90 maybe a 125 if you find a good deal. used, depends on where you live and how long you want to wait around for the best deal. I've seen 220 w/tank/top/light/stand/filters/fish/ for around 500-600... but typically for 500 you could get used for around 125-180

good to hear your more handy with your hands then myself.

how about a filter? pumps can run the budget dry real fast. same with a decent size heater for that size tank. im gonna say what everyone else said take your time and you can score a nice deal, i just got a 90 gal for 200 complete setup. (2 filters, good heater, stand, lights hood, even threw in a 25' python)

Ok I live in CT and have found monsters for very cheap. Bargainnews.com I think has a 350 gallon drilled for $300. The stand should cost about 60-70 bucks for some nice 4x4's and all box frame. Mine costed $30 for a 125 stand.
