:nilly:Hello Pep's,

I have 4 juv oscars they were paired up at the LFS where I bought them. they are in a 75g for now .. Just larger then a quarter. How big of a tank am I going to need to keep these little guy's happy?

180 probably

As long as you only keep 4 and keep the decor to a minimum you should be ok with a 75 but Ideal will be a 120 or 125.

Even when full grown ? I have a 200 I got on the cheap. But it's Know where near close to getting setup.

oscars become extremely territorial when put in such a small space, and they would end up beating on the weakest of the shoal. 4 feet of space is just too small IMO for 4 of them.

4 FULL GROWN oscars at potentially 12" each, confined to a small 75g space is asking for trouble. the MINIMUM i would put these guys in for life is a 125, preferably a 180 or larger if you can. you need the larger water volume to aid in water quality, so your not doing 50% WC everyday to keep your ammonia levels under control with the massive load they would put on 75g.

worse comes to worse, find another 75g if at all possible on CL or here, and split them in pairs. 75g for 2 oscars is most likely ok.

a 200g tank would give you 4 very happy oscars when they reach full size, unless it has some horrible footprint to it. and leave you a bit of room for a couple smaller fish too counting you have good filtration and keep up with your maintenance :)

Well after they hit 12 inches they slow down. So it might take it 4 years plus just to get it that another 4 inches. I'm getting my 125 tommorow(unless damn Ohio weather stops me) and after I get it all setup, I'm planning on at least 6 Oscars. Barebottom tank, kick ass filter(FX5 or two, lol) they would be nice. I want to have a few diff kinds in it too.

But to the question, even if you need to upgrade later it would still last awhile. Just get a good filter.

6 oscars in a 125? Thats a lot and no variety at all :nilly:

As with all larger fish, the bigger the better but 4 13-14" oscars should honestly at bare minumum be in a 120 or 125.

Could care less about variety.:D I like Oscars.:nilly:

Why would it not work. I've seen way, way, way, more overstocked tanks than 6 Oscars in a 125. Plus after a year they slow down quite a bit, might take 2-5 years just to pack on that 2 inches. I would get small Oscars, like at most 4 inches tops. So it would be awhile for them to get crowded. But ya, we will see, will keep everyone updated.
