How big of tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would do a single bass in a 200 gallon tank. Tankmates won't work!

I'd do bigger than a 200 - but just because they grow fast and get BIG.

My LMB is 17" and gets along perfectly with a 6" bluegill, a 38" American Eel and a 9" bullhead. When they were much smaller, the bass tried to eat the perch; got stuck and he ended up spitting him out. I expected the perch to die; nope. Now the perch rubs against him and everything... same with the Eel. Maybe I'm lucky but I have no issues.

Now, anything NEW added to the tank is dead freakin meat. That bass will eat other perch, just not this one. He'll hunt crayfish, helgremites, you name it. He's even got hold of my cats paw.

Trout will eventually fall ill in waters above 68 to maybe 70 degrees but that is pushing it...that is why they are not more popular. A chiller is going to be needed. Most people reccomend nothing above 60 degrees for trout.

I agree with this. I had a smallmouth bass in my 210 with a few other sunfish and it just didn't work. The bass needs that whole space to himself and the tankmates just got in the way. They weren't happy and were harassed all day/night by him. If you want a bass and tankmates you might want to think about a 300+ gallon tank. A 210 sounds big and it looks big when you first get one, but after awhile you realize just how small it really is.

Were they wild caught adolescents or raised from fry? Just curious... Soon as my pics finish uploading I'll show you how menacing my LMB is ;)
