How big should I go?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not once have I mentioned fish happiness, not once. I did say a bigger tank is more beneficial. The fish in the video looked trapped to my eyes with no chance of ever being able to swim at full speed or leap from the water as the have evolved to do in the wild. Maybe its just me but I pity that fish and its ****ty existence.
It also doesn’t have to worry about predators, diseases, parasites or where it’s next meal is coming from

True. Just a dull life of solitary confinement.
I think we've exhausted this subject now. You have your views, I have mine. Think I will leave it there. Age old argument, pointless carrying on. Let the op decide his arowanas fate.

Sounds good, nobody ever seems to agree on this subject, but no worries

Seems to have turned into a nonsense thread.
I’ve never kept an ark and doubt I ever wii, purely because I doubt I will ever have a tank big enough.
My opinion for what it’s worth is they aren’t really a fish most people should keep, if you have a nice 10 or 12 foot square pond would be cool to have a few swimming around in there but most tanks unless they are huge aren’t really adequate. I’m not going to give a tank size recommendation as I really have no idea but 6 foot seems far too small to me.
Good luck to OP, I would say check out some other options before you buy the arowana.

Couldn't control myself, but..
"BRO" doesn't seem legit between a 21 and a 48 yr old.
Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7 is as old as my dad and so I'm definitely listening to him and also what duanes duanes said is legit correct.
Duanes has more years of experience in Fishkeeping than most of our ages are.
Maybe they're right somehow somewhere it's upto the OP to decide, no ones putting no one in jail cause they put a silver aro in a 125 , a 160 , 240, 300 , 500, 600 or in some cases a 75.
There's no point trying to prove the chicken came first or did the egg.
End of conversation.

I think the OP has just gone and threw himself off a cliff!

The arowana, although not my cup of tea at all, is arguably the king of aquarium fish. Even I can't deny how majestic it is. Unfortunately it's a victim of its own beauty. Many hobbyists, sadly many of them young and inexperienced, just have to have this fish, but simply can't house them for life in the size of aquariums they require.

So you get people putting them in tanks that are too small and then argue until they're blue in the face that, in their opinion, they are doing the right thing by the fish because the fish is swimming ok, or it's eating ok. Is that really enough justification? Oh, and then they'll come out with the, "well it seems happy" line, which bewilders me.

For what it's worth i think some fish just deserve more than the bare minimum of what we can offer them and the majestic arowana is right up there.

If you come up with a genuine generous tank size for an arowana, then double it, then maybe, just maybe you might sort of be in the right ball park, arguably.

Hahah I didn’t mean to cause an argument! Was sincerely just trying to get information on where to start. I actually originally wanted to build a pond for my aro but it sometimes freezes during winter and after doing some research I’m not sure it’s possible to keep one heated, so he’d end up in a tank a few months out of the year anyways.

A local reef club member has a 600 so I’ll forget about the 300 and look into that. And a contractor to cut a bigger door hole, cos I don’t think a standard 36” opening is gonna cut it lol.

Your thread has been a rollercoaster.
But it's good your thinking the best for your fish. Good luck.

No worries. Monster Tank size is one of those touchy subjects, right up there with politics lol.
Not sure on pond heating, I’m sure there is info out there but none that I know.
Glad to see you have a plan! Sorry about the doorway...
