How big will an ornate get?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My tank is 120G so there is plenty of space. I only plan to have two bichirs. If that becomes the case I can always move my Sen. to the 36G.

my ornate is very calm and actually lives with a ray happily and most bichirs mouthes are small so buy baby ornate your only regret will be they are not as active a senegal

My ornate live happily with my senegals and delhezi. He isn't active too, always staring at me at the back right of the tank.

My 6 ornates have all hit the 24" mark. None have gone beyond that.

^This^ a 180gal is minimum for an Ornate or a 6'x2' footprint there are smaller polys with equally desirable patterns though palmas complex for instance

I've had 3 large ornates deathroll on numerous senegals and delhezi. I don't mix them any longer past 12".

Somewhat related to this discussion: What is the (usual) growth rate of Ornates?

I realize there are several parameters like number of water-changes, temperature, food, feeding routine etc.

Assuming "average case": 90-120 Gal tank, Weekly water change, 28-30 Deg Celcius temperature, Feeding a mix of Pellets (I feed Hikari Cichlid Gold) and Prawns, once or twice a day.

Thank you,
Sid
