my african knife is only about 8 inches at best. i've had him a few years and i keep up with the tank. he feeds on a mix of sinking cichlid pellets, bloodworms, flakes, and i swear he has eaten a few tetras.
I've had mine for 6 months and he's maybe grown 1.5". Around 4-5" when I got him, probably 6" now. He used to hide a lot but now he's out swimming all the time, he gets mostly sinking cichlid pellets but he really likes the Ken's soft & moist ones.
Mine is in a 75G growout (recently upgraded from a 55G) with 2 senegal polys, 5 jurupari, 2 festivums, and 2 red fin cigar sharks. The sharks are headed to the adult tank soon. The festivums and juru's are all around 4" or so and the sens and knife are 6" or so. I do 50% weekly w/c on all my tanks and my nitrates don't get over 15 ever. I think they're just relatively slow growers (the juruparis too; this is a long term growout situation).
