I have left lids open before also. Especially the tanks with canopies. It is way easy to miss on those. I never had one jump that way but my Dovii, jag, Elect blue cray, and tri mac have all met fate in that way. They all seem to escape by the hole for the HOB...

I dont even have lids on my tank with a canopy... Id be pissed if my dats jumped out somehow... but i think if they jumped out they would still fall back in the tank...

I don't have canopies on my tanks. They're a pain in the butt IMO. Don't canopies have lids though? If not, the fish would have to jump pretty high to clear it.

do you really want to risk it, especially with dats? btw, how is that one with the growth on it?

I use glass lids and my canopy has a lid. With no lids I would think it would detriment the wood to a more severe degree?

I have no lids because my 120G tank was used when i bought it and someone made there own hood. The hood was crafted so there is a spot that holds the light fixture, and no lids came with the tank. The only spot the fish would be able to get out of the tank would be if they jumped out the back where the hole is for the HOB ac110. But i have a blue sheet on the back so even if he did jump over the HOB filter somehow, he would slide back in....

Canopy isnt a hassle at all... its DIY and i still love it. not the prettiest but w/e.

And about the Datnoid with the growth... he passed away.. heres one more final pic of him in the Q tank... he deteriorated down to nothing, and the lump subdued but the flesh rotted all around where the lumps were... i think parasites, but its weird because he was in a tank with 8 Geophagus from 2-3.5" and 5 other dats around the same size... but figures the biggest one got the parasite..

What really sucks is my Istlanum jumped...it's not such an easy fish to replace. I had 2 and one just died out of nowhere and now this one commited suicide.

AH, sorry to hear about the Dat.

Sorry to hear that Balton, I don't keep tops on my older tanks just haven't gotten around to getting some glass yet. Do you keep some type of nocturnal fish with them.
I was just wondering cause alot of times they can freak or startle other fish when swimming around in the dark. I don't keep catfish and the like. So I have never had this happen. (Yet, Knock on Wood)

It's a 156 gallon growout tank. There's only a bunch of 3-4" cichlids in it. I don't know they jumped. I don't keep catfish either, I have one striped raphael in another tank that I've had for 10 years but that's it...nothing else nocturnal.
