How can i cure HITH desies....

personally i reckon thats best advice simple and to the point. hith has unknown causes. the simple fact is that no one knows the cause. some theorys are that its related to metals in the water, stray electrical currents from heaters/filters or bad water conditions.. intrestingly the carbon filter was mentioned lots of times. i never use carbon but can anyone confirm that these filters pads are only supposed to be used for a short period say 4 weeks before they begin to dump what they have collected back in to the water? im 85% sure this is true and if so removing the carbon would help big time for no other reason than its not being used properly if its left in a tank constantly

id go with bad water conditions. can i ask what amount of water changes you make on the tank and how often?

when i got my 7ft tank for oscars i noticed what seemed like HITH and tried a few different things. it seemed severe and sudden it turned out that the heater i had in the tank wasnt enough and one sider was cold and the other side warm. adding another heater solved this problem. im not saying this is your problem but its worth a mention for anyone else searching the forum for HITH in the future.

Dannyboy..... This isn't what you wrote on the same topic in the other Oscar thread that's up right now. I belive you wrote that it is a result of "lazy fish keepers."
 
test the PH if its low kick it up slowly as fish are more prone to HITH at lower PH

yep, hence bad water conditions. would you like me to spell it out for you puffer girl?
 
OK we have already said this on a different thread, GET A BIGGER TANK! as the water in has 33gal will be abit crapy.
 
You said no one knows exactly what causes it that it could have to do with anything from heater to carbon to vitamin deficiency..... I'm sure bad water quality does cause it but that may not be the only thing, and metals in the water doesn't necessarily mean you don't clean your tanks. Obviously, all tanks need to be cleaned regularly or your fish will get sick!!!!

In turn this is either caused by bad diet or by parasites.

The med of choice for this is metronidazole, sold in your LFS as hex-a-mit.
Remove carbon ( as stated) as many will strip out Vit K and also will strip out the meds.
Only use carbon to remove meds, it should not be a permanent part of your filtration unless you have chronicly bad water. If you do use carbon constantly you need to replace it every 10 days - 2 weeks...which gets pricey.

change 25% or more water before each treatment.
raising the temp also can help ( up to 90 F with max airation)

great info just wanted to add a bit though prolonged exposure to high nitrates also contributes to hith as for the vitamins i would recommend using multi vitamins powered and soaked into pellets most of the time it is from poor diet use high quality cichlid pellets
