My family as a small pond (I'mm geussing about 150-200 gallons) and I'm haveing a problem with green water in it. There are a few plants and fish in it and nothing really helps. We put some stuff in that's should get rid of it but that stuff didn't do anything. The plant's include water hyacith, water lettuce, duckweed, two different kinds of iris, and pennywort. For fish there are about thirty guppies (and counting). There's a frog in there also (he got there by himself). Can anybody please help me out on this. If you need pictures of it all just tell me and I'll get them.:)

I'm having that problem too:( . I am hoping I can get it to go away without buying a UV sterilizer. I don't REALLY wanna spend that kinda money but I wanna be able to see my fishes.

UV sterilizer is the only way to go. That is the only way my uncle has found to keep the water clear on his 9000gl pond, and let me tell you they work great. Well worth the money for any pond IMO.

Heres an example of what a UV sterilizer can do.

Notice the big difference in visibility. That is how it looks after a couple days with the UV on. The pics are at different intervals, but it gives you an idea.

What kind of filter do you have on it now?

If none, it's a good place to start - right after a couple of good size water changes. You can make your own for a little more than the price of a pump. If you already have a pump your half way there.

Did they put in an algaeicde?

A pic of the pond and one of the pump / filter too.

You could try and chuck in a bunch of daphnia or water fleas a small filter feeding freshwater crustacean. Hopefully they reproduce and filter faster than the guppies eat them. And if it doesnt work, you have wasted a couple of dollars on fish food. But then this is probably a short term cure...and again no garantees

Would freshwater clams do the same? Also would they stay alive through the winter in michigan? I am starting to think I am going to have to take the big dive. I am adding more plants first though to see what that does.

Dr Joe, I just looked at the stuff my parents put in and it's just starts the benaficial bacteria colony. Why do I have to have the dumb parents?:( Any way I got the pictures.
