How Can I Get Rid of Green Water

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Congradulations! Your parents made you a bunch of work. Be sure to to remind them of that around allowance raise time.

Barley staw takes a long time to work (has to start decomposing). They make a liquid conentrate but it's all marginal.

Temporarily remove the 2nd filter (or all) material and replace it with poly fil batting (walmart or cloth stores, cheap) Make sure its not too close to the pump inlet, you don't want the pump sucking it in. This it a lot finer and will filter more, BUT it HAS to be cleaned more often. You'll have to get a feel for how often by checking it daily to see how fast it is clogging up.

Keep us posted, I'd like to see you get it cleaned up before the frost kills it. :D   (sorry couldn't resist) Snow is also detrimental to algae (sorry again).

And when you get the algae under control, we'll talk about making that filter more of a biological type .

Ok... Best bet... Starting from the Righttake out the bio-balls, light gray filter and the black filter and put in poly fil batting. try that for a week-checking it morning and night for the first 2 days if it's on 24 / 7. the one a day the rest of the week.

IMPORTANT: Put the bio-balls and other filters in the pond to keep the bacteria alive that's in the filter now. And put them in a bucket of pond water (get the water before you put the algaecide in) for 2 days when you put the algaecide in the pond.

Be careful on the algaecide...make sure it's won't hurt your plants.

By the way..Nice pond and pics. You've got something good to work with.

I will Dr Jeo, thanks for the help :). Should I put the plants in a bucket too? And could the algeacid hurt the frog or my fish?

Most algaecides don't hurt fish / frogs. Check directions for sure.

If the plants are potted sure, and set them in the shade (not dark) so water doesn't get too hot. Follow directions for how long to keep plants out.

Hey, while I got you here... Are you sure your 13? You type like your older. I've got a 12year old nephew and he's an idiot...but so is his 17 yo brother. :D 12 yo couldn't clean out his turtle tank...and that's a no brainer.

Keep up the good work,

Im only 15 so I know I don't have a whole lot over you but I can say that you are really grown up for your age. I know when I was 13 I wasn't like that with my fish. I was more like hmmmm..... I like oscars lets get 10! Keep up the good work.

Uv would be nice, but let's see if we can clear it up for less than an arm or leg.

Besides you learn more this way and you still have to filter the dead algae out anyway.
