How cold can a mbuna tank get?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
? So you bought tropical fish for an unheated tank? Ideally they should be above 78 but I've known people that kept them around 72 with no ill effects except slower growth and a lack of breeding.

My algae scrubber, supplies heat. For years the house was kept at 74f 24x7. As I worked third shift. Someone was always home. Until last spring, so the house gets down to 65 during the day.
I actually had a problem of pushing above 80f last year.

My tanks are at 72'F currently. I don't think they will get much cooler. I will probably insulate the 55 gallon barrels. I use during water changes. As they will soon be in a 55 degee unheated basement. When some Minnesota winds come our way.
I am curious just how cold. They can take. Years ago in Arizona, I remember seeing Tilapia, in 55' F water. Well trout fishing. Stocked ponds. I think they are a tropical cichlid.
I might put some of my culling to find out.
I was told it was a humane way of culling. Put them out side in winter.

102 pages? You were asking about fish and pages 69-74 explained their recommendations. You also asked about humane methods so I posted the link. It's up to you to decide how you want to euthanize the fish in your aquariums.

I don't want to euthanize any of them. 50 pound flatheads are much easier to catch with live bait, but that's a whole other can of worms.
I am looking at heating 300 gallons of water, but from what I have been reading, holding that 300 gallons at 70'F. All winter will be alright.
Based on African tilapia cichilds, they can take some 55'f water.
