How cold can a mbuna tank get?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
we can always just make it easy and ask a Microbiologist duanes duanes RD. RD.

The mean temp of Lake Malawi is 77'F. and changes very little, because it sits right on the equator. So a few degrees on either side would be an optimum temp range for cichlids endemic to it. And because mbuna or any other Lake Malawi fish have evolved to those very stabile conditions, any temps too far off on either side are enough to cause stress, which compromises a fishes immune system.
Tilapines are an entirely different story, they range from the mid east where it gets cold to South Africa.where in winter temps dip down into the 50sF. So Lake Malawi fish and Tilapia endure vastly different climatic conditions. A tilapine endemic to Lake Barumbi mbu or Bermin would be exceptions and probably not tolerate the condition a tilapine like nilotcus from the ever changing waters of the Nile in Northern Africa, or Tilapia gallilius from Israel normally live in.
Ich range in size from 0.5 - 1 micron, this is small enough to pass thru just about any standard aquarium filter. And although it would not normally be found in treated tap water. The cysts ca be brought in on plants, bog wood just about anything previously used in an aquarium or pond.

Thank you for the information. It is comphorting to know however.
That when it is -20 below, and the power goes out, here in Iowa. That my tropical fish are touph enough to hang in their down to 55F. That buys enough time to get the generator operational.

I had some pearsei that became too big for my 150 gal, so I put them in an already set up 300 gal rubbermaid in July, about a week later there was a cold snap in Wisconsin where night temps hit 50'F, they didn't make it. Some Geo braziliensus tool it in stride and spawned as hit went back up to 60'F. I guess it's all about what certain species can tolerate, or not.

I had some feeder fry, in 55F degree water for a week. I lost one. Rift lake cichlids have some interesting genetics.
I lost a salt tank many years ago, ice storm power outage for a week. It has always left me shy about tropical exotics.

If your current aquarium never have An ich out break in the past 6 months and no new fish is introduced. Then I don't think the fish will get ich due to lower temperature.
