listen, we could take jabs at each other all day, it wont get anyone anywhere. If you can keep the tank between 75-79 consistently you will be most likely be fine.

im glad we can agree on one thing tho :D

thanks everyone for the entertaining thread!!

when my heater broke my tank temp dropped a few degrees for a few days my oscar survived fine i did notice he seemed sluggish and a lot less happier then normal tho (different colouration too), i guess if you have been getting along fine so far with your temp then your fish will probably be fine. i personally like to keep my tanks warmer then room temp my fish seem to be happier that way but im not saying mine is 'the right way' to keep fish but each to their own and if it works for you then it works

atleast you do own a heater if you did need it

good luck! :)

EDIT: one quick question, i might have missed it but how much water have you got in your tank?

lol ya i see that! go look at my tthread in the photo lounge! finally got my firemouths! dont know why i put it in the photo lounge cause i aint got no pics yet but still go look!

i forgot to turn the heat on in the house that night
This would be a good reason for you to put in a heater. No, it doesn't have to be 80ºF, that's true. But you can set it to 72ºF so it comes on when the occasional 'forgetfulness' threatens the life of your fish. Then you aren't relying on it most of the time but it's there to save the day if someone leaves the front door open in the middle of winter.

So I'm trying to bridge the gap between what people are saying and what you want to know. Hope that closes it.

a) Oscars can live in the mid-seventies somewhat well.
b) Maybe they shouldn't have to, but obviously they ought to be okay as long as nothing else goes wrong.
c) Using a heater year round is not necessarily required to keep a fish like an Oscar, but having it there is worth doing in case of emergency and for stability's sake.

Also, cover that heater or get a smash guard of some sort. Oscars do love to knock them around.
