Gars are just Florida gars, but they are reallllly light colored. I think I'm gonna grab some frozen rats for this guy, I think he's the rarest catfish ever... Won't eat shrimp or massivore lol. Think rats are a good diet? Definitely not a natural food source, I wonder how they compare nutritionally to pellets or shrimp?
 
Would really depend on what they've been fed. the better you feed your feeders the more nutritious is your feeders are
 
why arnt rats natural? If it finds itself in or around the water, its considered food lol. I actually just fed my rtc a mouse because my snakes refused to eat. He wasnt sure what to do with it but he sucked it down after investigating.
 
Well I was told he's only eaten rats for years (I guess that's what happens when u get a fish from a reptile breeding facility) I just can't imagine mammals make up a big portion of most fish diets. Guess it's just different than what I'm used to, he's big n healthy tho so it can't be too bad I guess
 
Its a jungle out there, rats typically dont spend that much time near the waters where they can run into danger, but if they do. lol. I always enjoy the oddities that arnt thought of as food for fish. Such as large Esox eating waterfowl. Either way, the rtc loved the mouse and with what he left me the next day, it digested quite well. He also grew quite abit that week(hes only 8" right now)
 
That sir is a stunning redtailX amazing pattern & for free, dosen't get much better then that! And im sure rats shouldn't hurt him as I've seen a load of rats/ducklings get eatten by fish down the local fishing pools, although mabey try to mix some kind of other foods into his diet.
