The problem in NZ is that we have a list of species that are allowed to be imported and thats it. It has hardly been updated since the mid 90's when it was first introduced, and the species that have been added since then have mostly been catfish or cichlids. Its not impossible to add new species to the list, just very difficult as you have to prove to a bunch of bureaucrats who know little about fish that they will not pose a risk to native species if they are released or escape....
The LFS I deal with are very good and will try to get hold of anything interesting that is available.
