I am running two filters on my tank. They are from Aqua-Tech which is Walmart brand. I bought them years ago for a freshwater tank. My lfs says they are crap and even though i'm "over filtered" they aren't enough. I have one 5-15 gallon and a 20-40 gallon. Here is the website: http://www.aqua-tech.biz/sites/aquatech/content.aspx?menu_id=34&id=56

They use the replaceable cartridge filters with the cloth and activated carbon and have a "biofilter" for bacteria....

Do i need a new filter system?

I saw this and thought about getting it http://www.amazon.com/H-T-Magnum-Canister-Filter/dp/B000260FVQ

OK... I google that and I think it may be a SMIDGE big for my application... just a little...for my 29 gallon tank

I wouldn't replace them just to replace them...but, if they do go bad, I would look at other options. I have a couple of the Aqua-Tech filters and they seem to do just fine.

How are your parameters holding? If they seem to stay pretty level and water change frequency isn't out of control, then I'd say you are filtered appropriately.

A FX5 will be too much for a 29 lol.

I do like the HOT 250. I have the 350 Canister version and actually like the filter a lot. Many here use the 250 as a water polisher. It may be a good choice if and when you do upgrade.

Parameters (water quality) seem ok. I do have alot of algae currently (see other thread) which I was thinking may be a cause as per my lfs

I haven't read your other thread yet, heading there next. But, I doubt your filters, or lack of filtration is causing algae blooms. Excessive lighting (incuding ambient light from windows, etc) is the major cause of algae growth. Proper feeding techniques and frequent, appropriate water changes also help eliminate algae.

Filtration cleans your water of particulates and allows a place for BB to colonize and grow. I have seen heavily filtered tanks still suffer from unwanted algae blooms. If you're happy with your filters and they are doing the job, don't worry about changing them out.

ok cool. I just didn't know how bad the Wal-mart filters were

We know but we gotta give you a hard time :)
