How crappy are my filters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Fluval, eheim, marineland are very good brands.when I first had my 55 gallon set up,my brother gave me his 5 inch pleco, since algae was building up,I would highly recommend though a hot magnum 250 for that tank.I had one set up my 55 gallon running with the penguin 350.I was blown away on how much stuff the hang on canister captured.I have some fishes that produce quite a bit of waste in my set up now,so currently I am running a Marineland magnum 350 canister and the marineland penguin 350 powerfilter on my 125 gallon tank set up.The prices on those 250 canisters are cheap on petsolutions even at certain pet stores like pet supplies plus.I could of easily sold you my 250 for 30 dollars, but my brother now has it for his 55 gallon tank set up.

I see they have a pro model too... Any advantage to getting that one? The pro was going for 79.99

The Pro model comes with two bio-wheel/spray bar outlets. I had them on my 150 at first and they seemed to do pretty good. When I upgraded that tank, I moved the 350 to my 29g brackish tank. Almost right away the bio wheels quit turning. I assume the salt must have been the issue. I then moved the filter to a 29g fw tank where it is today. Just my experience, but bio-wheels and salt water doesn't seem to be a good combination.

bio wheels is a option to be honest, cause I only have the deluxe magnum 350,with out the bio wheel,it will do the same thing, you are just paying extra for the convenience of the bio wheels.I use aquarium salt for my tank and so far the biowheels on my penguin 350 are still working fine.

So my real question is... Is it worth doing it now or wait till I have more fish/coral/life in general? Will it help with my algae issue?

Yea or neh?

Hey Tony,

My opinion remains the same. Of course, you can upgrade if you wish...but I really don't think it's required in this case. I believe the major catalyst in your recent algae bloom problems is the ambient light source. Simply keeping the blinds closed for a few days and keeping up with water changes will let you know without spending any extra cash :)

BTW, once you scrape the algae, you might get lucky and be able to collect some of it in your fish net.

Either way, good luck!

Your algae is caused by excess nutrients.

I can say that with 100% certainty.

I would upgrade your HOT filters, but only to the extent of making them larger, maybe look into an AC110, which would be perfect for a tank like this, and much better than a canister in my mind.
