True, just don't use the media that comes with them. I do use empty HOB filter as a sort of mini-fuge with only LR in there & then they add some flow to the tank.

Media in a FW filter for SW tanks is a nitrate catcher. Just add live rock rubble in there, if you want to use that filter for flow. It will need to be cleaned out with SW from your tank, when the flow slows due to detritus build up.

Unless you plan on taking it all out & rinsing it every few days, it collects nitrate in there. FW filtration is totally different than SW. Do yo have a skimmer for the tank?
