how did you get into the game?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Back when I was around 10 I had been given a 10 gallon tank that had a fire bellied newt, a plec, and a pair of swords. Eventually we moved and had to get rid of the tank and inhabitants. So life went on, got married had kids, wife looks at me one day and asks "If you had to choose a hobby what would it be?" Response was "Either getting back into aquarium keeping or gynkhana." Enough said, now I've become a poly kinda guy and looking forward to setting up after this last move from the Midwest to New England.

I always thought I hated animals. But 1 day my brother gave me a 1.5 gal.... 2 years later I have 55, 90, 150, and the 1.5. I still can't believe it. Now my 2 year old daughter helps me do water changes.

When I was younger 5-6 I saw my aunt's tank (think it was a 220) and I was always into the fish in ponds, going fishing, etc... In 1979 I got my first 20 gallon tank and have not looked back since and had a aquarium of some sort ever since then even when I was in the NAVY for 10 years. Think I've kept about every type of fish in these 30+ years and don't ever see me stepping back in the near future. I'm happy with my 350, but see me getting a 10'x3'x30" tank sometime very soon :)

My story is pretty much the same except sub a 150 for the 220 and a 300 for the 350.

Sorry if this thread was already done I didn't know. Thanks for sharing guy's it seems like most people have a connection from childhood. I have a 3 year old daughter who always wants to feed my fish I wonder if she will one day be a mfk too.

As I was always interested in animals, science and the like. Had many different pets as a child and even now as an adult. Fish were out of the norm and always caught my interest. Some 36+ years ago I got started into my first aquariums. It was a boyhood Christmas gift from my parents. Back then there wasnt half the things you see today. Lots has evolved since then. We used box/corner filters, under gravel filters and some of the first hob filters back in the 70's. Its stuck with me as one of the most enjoyable things in my life for many of years. So much so that my wife who when I met never had fish tanks, now has the bug as bad as I do as she has her own group of big and small tanks with her choices of fish and my daughter who just turned 21 this month has her own fish tanks as well. Over the years its been described as a love, a passion, and an addiction. Id have to agree with all the above. lol

My moms twin brother was really into fish when I was about 7 or so. I went over to his house and saw his 300 gallon redline snakehead and Oscar tank, his 150 piranha tank, and about two dozen other 50 to 120 gallon tanks. He had some tanks that were big predators, others where relatively rare fish at the time were breeding, and a lot of variety.

One day my cousin and I went to his house with him to feed the fish and we walked in on a squishy floor. The 150 piranha tank had sprung a leak and it was almost empty, fish flopping all around. My uncle just started grabbing them and throwing them in the 300 which was above it. I guess my cousin and I were making some OOOOHHHH sounds because after about 8 of the 20 or so had gone into the tank my uncle looked up and saw what had been exciting us so much. The 30 inch redline snakehead had pounded 6 of the 6 inch piranha so far and was about to get the seventh. The sheer power of that fish had me spellbound.

I got a 10 gallon the next week and began keeping fish. When I got good at it my parents allowed me to purchase a 90 gallon from my uncle and it was over from there. Guess what the first fish in there was? A 3 inch redline snakehead.

I had always been really into animals growing up, my grandparents have property with 3 connected ponds with 50k+ combined and every weekend I'd be up there fishing and catching frogs/tadpoles. Somewere around 17 I decided to buy a goldfish and put him in a non-cycled 10 gallon with tap water and crappy blue gravel. From there I read & read and eventually found MFK and now I'm deep into the hobby.

I was given a gold fish in 1965. I think it lived about a week.
