There is probably a similar thread in here somewhere but I am still curious where people come up with the names for their pets. I let the pet "inspire" me. My neighbor (retired Army) has a military theme. His dog is Huey (helicopter), cats are sgt. and major, and a russian tortoise named Sherman (tank).

My pets:

Scooter - the Old English Mastiff, my son wanted to name him cooter after dukes of hazard but there was something creepy about yelling for cooter out the door of my house.

Dizzy - the Lab, she is a blonde, what else.

Cricket - the French Bulldog constantly bounces up and down

Donk - the French Bulldog, he is just a dufus

Abe - the cat named after Abe Vigoda because of the amount of hair coming out of his ears

Blueberry - Aldabra looks like a giant blueberry in the yard

Stump - big sulcata looks like a tree stump in the yard

Spud - big sulcata that looked like a little potato when he was a baby

There is a some others but this will get us started.

When my Tegu was a baby and I thought it was a female... My girlfriend named 'her' Delilah. Delilah has since proven to be a male. But the name Delilah stuck. It doesn't bother him though, because "Delilah is all man"

The Rubber Boas are named "The Rubber Boas"
The Pastel Ball Python is named "The Pastel"
The Butter Ball Python is named "The Butter"
etc, etc, etc....

hmm ...well
Eclipse has a crescent moon shape on his head.
Spotlight is named for the perfect white circles going down her tail.
Thanatos got his name from the physcological reference to the word meaning 'a tendency towards evil or wrong doing.' he lives up to the name
Thallassian is named after the greek word for sea because he loves water.

Darwin the Carpet Python got his name because when I was trying to figure out what locality he was, and someone suggested the darwin locality. That wasn't it, but it was similar looking and I liked the name. :)

My dogs are the only thing that I name. My black lab was adopted from another family at age 2, so her name of Chelsea just carried over. My Shepard-Husky mix is named Dakota. I don't know why, but I liked the name so it kinda stuck.

All my pets have weird names based on strange things...

Ezekiel - My favorite Cherax destructor, named for the archangel of Death, because he's a mean f*cker that attacks/kills/etc anything that moves.

Radar- My chinchilla, is named after Radar from M*A*S*H, though I tell everyone it's because his ears move around like radar dishes since no one seems to know that show. *sigh*

Phobos- My tarantula, which I'm terrified of. The word phobia comes from Phobos, which was the greek god of fear. So, it seemed appropriate.

Tullius, Crixus, Batiatus and Varro- My crested geckos, named after characters from Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

I haven't named the blue tongue skink that I took in, mostly because I'm not sure I'm not just going to let one of my friends take it (he loves them and has 2 already). But my fiance has been calling it "The Skank", and I think that's going to stick lol

i tend to go by personality then name them in a different language if i can.
my dempsey that likes to hide is phobios(for the greek god^^) my other dempsey always frieked out when i opened the tank , so she is demios(greek god of panic)
my beardie is copper because his beard and areas of his head where orange and he has copper colored iris's.
my scorpion is amp because he thinks he is big, so he has an amped up attitute+he is super hyper like he drank an energy drink.
been thinking of getting a few rhacodactylus. if i do i will probably name them in
Tok-Pisin, the root language of the area they are from. then use words to describe them, like fire, multicolors, clown, flower, talker, spirit. i just really like using different languages

Well... currently I only have three herps so....

My tegu I thought was a boy when I got her but I found out he was a she. I named her Riley from the show the Boondocks which I LOVE. When I found out she was a girl the name just stuck.

My normal phase leopard gecko I named Angel because she is just such a sweet lizard and is super chill.

My tangerine phase leopard gecko is named Pandora. I named her that because I thought the name fit her aggressive and bitey personality. I have owned quite a few leos before and I have had to give them away or they died on me(sick petsmart lizards) but this girl is ridiculous. It took me two years to get her to realize I was not going to kill her and to this day almost 5 years old she is still a bit jittery when handled. She is very food aggressive and gave my other leo nasty wounds when housed together. She is one of the only lizrard that has ever bitten me.BUT I do love her.

I called my dog "Nom Nom"

Because the way he chew his food is too darn CUTE!
