How difficult are rays to keep?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I sounds like you will do just fine. Much better than what I did with my ray when I first got her. MFK helped me right my wrongs, and now I have gone off the deep end.

The hardest thing I always hear about Rays is the food cost. How much do these guys eat anyways?

Well I'll say that my story is rare so wait for other people to give you a better idea.

When I got my ray I had a 60 gallon tank and about 3 mounths of aquarium hobby under my belt. I started out with a retic, saposidly one of the harder rays. I was doing water changes once a mounth and feeding a blood worm cube a day. Lets just say then i found mfk and people like miles and nic save me. Now i have a 150 gallon stingray pond and doing water changes a whole lot more than once a mounth (still should be doiing more but...). I wouls suggest to start with a motoro the are said to be the hardiest. Imo a 5'X6' pound will be fine for around 3 motoros. Some people will tell you "oh no thats not big enough for life motoros get 36in" but there are very few motoros over 24", Agian just my opinion and people will probabley have diffrent to say. Hope this helps.

and how old are these rays.... from most ive talked too there growth does slow down and they do keep growing but slower...ive seen pictures of some very old rays that are well over 30" disk... so the few in the states that are maybe 6 or 7 years old may only be 20-24" disk...something to think about there... for 3 motoro adults i would recomend 6' round pond 24-36"deep 0r 8'x5'

Ooooh, I could go along the back wall which is next to the sump pump closet and put an 8x5 in to comfortably house 3....3 is the number I was going for.

Go for it, especially since you already understand that they need a pond and you are okay with that. I would recommend motoro or if you have some money, get marbled motoros. Your biggest hurdle is finding/buying healthy rays. Since you are new to rays you want to find a vendor on MFK selling captive babies. Unfortunately wild caught rays often have a couple of strikes against them as far as health is concerned. The way to buy wild is if you know you are buying wild caughts that have been in the states for at least a month, and thriving of course. Just be prepared to spend some money to get healthy specimens, totally worth it, but a hard lesson to learn when buying expensive fish.

I gained access to restaurant distributor warehouse, so my food bill isn't too bad.

Well i think if you got there parameters right and ur willing to clean the tank alot and u know the basics like nitrates 0-10 nitrites 0 Amonia 0 and temperature roughfly 81-82 degrees then in say do some more reasearch and go for it.
