How do gold severums go with aggressive tank mates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think the best option for myself would be to not keep any of the carpintis and have a more peaceful cichlid tank.

I agree. The only reason I asked about the severum was that I have read on some sites that they only get to 4-6inches and there has been a green severum at a local pet store that is about 5 inches or so and seems like it hasn't grown for the the past 6 months that it has been there. What sizes do you find they generally grow to? also the tank I was going to be keeping the carpintis and gold spot pleco in is a 48"x18"x18" do you think that is big enough?

Well it is better then the other tank because it is deeper. I have a male super red severum right now almost 10" and he is prob around 2yrs old. I used to have a large old female gold close to 14" that lived in a 90 cube ( about 32 wide 22 deep 32 high) until a power outage while not home. I find that severums grow slower then many cichlids but with low fish loads to volume of water good diet and frequent water changes equal a faster growing severum. Also i think that they may grow a bit faster with a school of them then singly. If so then i would think it is a hormone thing sort of like it is with many loaches one getting huge while most of the rest growing at a normal rate. I have a 4 to 5 inch super red severum right now thinking female that was about an inch and a half or less back in May of last year.

Just keep an eye on them for now. It may be fine or for now with the numbers of texas they might be more concerned with each other then in the severum.

just keep them in the tank until they grow too large and upgrade, smaller tanks can always be available for good prices

Well after all this discussion for an unknown reason my new gold severum died today after only having it 2 days. I have never had a fish die this quick before and wonder if it was something it had before I purchased it. The pet shop I bought it from was less than a 5 minute drive so I doubt transport played a part in it.

After this happening I don't think I will be replacing it and think that it is just best that I keep the carpintis on its own with the gold spot.

to be honest I have had fish die of seemingly no reason in good quality water. I think stress is a good contributor that we can't always see.

I had two geophagus die for no reason and every other fish in the tank has been fine since.
