I have a 75 gallon tank and have fallen in love with all I've read about severum and heroes. I'd like to start with a juvenile. My favorite lfs sells mainly 2-3 inch juvies I of course want one with lots of color and am torn between green, turquoise, spotted, and rotkeil... just want bright colors, and of course a healthy fish. What should I look for?

Well it's mainly going to be what you like. But look for ich or anything out of the blue. Are they active and if they're being picked on. Are the stomachs deflated or swollen... Lfs can carry many diseases and tend to not feed as frequently.

I drive an hour to get to this place cause it's the only one one I trust... they take good care of their fish, but they only have one "red shoulder" 3 inch who was just tan with brown stripes no color yet and it's hard to find examples of what juvies should look like at that size

Rotkeil all the way. You don't know how lucky you are to have them readily available. I can't get any at all for any price in my country (Australia), whereas green and gold severums are a few dollars each anywhere. Even blue/turquoise are quite rare and expensive.
