so the LFS owner told me 95 percent of the time i can just get a male and a female convict. and they will pair. is this true? i've heard that you have to get 6 and once they form a pair the others have to be removed. if i can tell if they are male and female, can i just pick them out and put em in the tank for them to breed? thankyall

Yes out of all the Cichlid species the Convict doesn't have to naturally pair up. I say 99% of the time lol.

Lol just make certain ya get a male and female. Males are just black and white stripes while the females get some added orange to their sides. Very easy to sex convicts, even pink convicts can be sexed by to addition or lack of the orange color.

But yeah extremely easy to breed just as everyone else has said. 1 male 1 female and your set. Just a word of advice if ya plan on breeding em just make sure they are the only fish in the tank as they will kill anything and everything else in the tank.

To clarify....convicts are aggressive....but won't kill bigger hardy fish. If you throw them in with guppies you'd have a problem. It is also fun to watch them protect their territory. Make sure to have rocks for them.

IDK about you but I've personally lost fish about 2-3x a convicts size just due to convicts breeding. Lost a few decent sized (7-8in) male peacock cichlids to em before. Granted that was back when I still thought you could keep any cichlid with any other cichlid. Due to that I don't like having mixed tanks anymore.
