How do I get my little dats to be more active?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just take some decor out. I've noticed lots of members are feeding alot to grow these little guys up ad quick ad possible.the down side is they are less active when full -
after feeding.
Try feeding like once a day. I'm assuming u feed 2-3 times daily?

My 55g has 32 watts and the little dats are all over the place. If you add lots of hiding places, they will feel more secure. Driftwood and java moss works very nicely. Sometimes, if you add some tankmates like some cory cats or some small bichirs, they will come out more.

I was thinking about taking out the lava rocks I have in my tank. I tried that a few weeks ago for 1 day and some of them would crash into the glass when I got near. What do other people think about taking out their hiding spots?

Oh well I mean it forces them to be in the open, and eventually they will stable up when they are used to it. Especially in your case because you have so many it shouldnt be a problem. Give it a second try.

I know what you mean. I just have dim lighting for them right now (a nearby lamp). I tried to put my 4 ft. light fixture over their tank and they immediately got spooked. I still want to buy lights for them bc they look so much better with tank lights and hopefully they'll get used to it.

I have flourescent lights on my 55 and they are all fine.

Dats are just slow with everything; growing, eating prepared foods, getting used to its surroundings...

It takes a lot of time and patients to keep dats. Just give it some time, I highly recommend getting your lighting system on a timer; it has really helped me. Have a lot of hiding spots through out the tank should help as well, so when they are swimming around and get spoked there will be a hide right there. I would also recommend getting some peaceful tankmates as well like silver dollars. then in no time they should be out and about.

Yep, I used to feed them about 5 times a day when I first got them but now it's just twice a day. I haven't fed them yet today and they're all out of their caves.

I'm going to try taking out one rock a day as you suggested. Gotta listen to Ade, he seems like the dat expert around here.

Yeah, silver dollars seem like perfect dither fish for dats. I was actually at the LFS yesterday and about to buy some but the stoner assistant there recommended neon tetras instead. He said, "Dude, they're perfect cuz they're so colorful and fast and will get all your dats out." I was stupid and bought 6 of them. I put em in my tank and they were all dinner within a few minutes. So, lesson to everyone here: if the guy selling you fish at the LFS smells like pot, don't take his advice
