How do i get my spotted gars on pellets ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I starved my 10.5" Spotted Gar for one week trying to get him on pellets and he made it! I used frozen krill on the stick and wiggle it in front of him and he took it out of the stick like he never ate anything before.

did ya try the method i told ya
or else you can send me your gars and i will train them :D

I had a florida gar that I trained pretty easily. I would just 1 feeder at a time and after a while he learns when they will hit the water and start hitting on them almost right out of your hand.(at least mine did) Then I tossed a dead one and he ate it. Then another and another. Then I tossed him krill and he ate that and shrimp but never pellets. One bite and spit them out. Never tried starving him due to other tankmates safety.

that is going to be very tough. they do best with a varied diet and fish are their staple so youd need a heck of a meaty pelleted food. I tried making my own grub and that works well, meaty and much more sanitary than feeders.

Ill agree that a varried diet will generally be best for fish, but given the presumption that tank temp will be 79+ i would say pellet staple is a very good choice when u look at protein content pellet wins every time... the higher water temp means the fish will have a higher/faster metabolism... therefore pellet is a ideal food of choice...

The only way to convert a gar is indeed through patience and persistence... Mine gave in relatively quickly though!

Like everyone said, starve him and vary his diet, try to feed him at the same time ever or every other day. So he knows that at that time if feeding time and just feeding pellets and he'll get the hint.
