How do I get rid of this white crud?

What do you have in your house? I haven't tried muriatic acid so I don't know if this is okay. You could try vinegar. It's a weak acid so it won't work as effectively as most acids would.

I solder with muratic acid daily it is some realllly nasty stuff I wouldn't put it any where near my tank but thats just me. If I solder enough in a day I get nose bleeds from that stuff,

i would use a cleaner called Kaboom! (by that annoying Oxyclean guy-billy mayes lol). i use it on my glass covers and it strips off the deposits. just spray it in there and let it sit for a while then use a razor or spackling blade and start scraping.

ive seen some pretty gnarly tanks that are cleaned (and look just as bad or worse than yours) and look great..
