how do I make my aro feel at home?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Any tankmates aside from the other aro? Mine (5 inches) was skittish when he was alone in the tank and won't eat but when I put it with silver dollars it became more comfortable and after a few days started accepting pellets. Good luck.

no just the its just the two aros. They seem to be doing fine with each other and the new one seems may even be more aggressive. Both of them eat the pellets but I've been trying to find out what else they are interested in unfortunately so many foods that I have bought either dont float or stay aflout long enough to become completely consumed and I think the freeze dried krill I bought the other day is to tough for them to eat they usually spit it out or dont touch it at all.

Forgot to mention I soak my aro's pellets to soften it. I also give it freeze dried brine shrimp but nothing hard yet coz it might damage the digestive system. Good to hear your aros are doing fine.

So yea you should line your tank walls with some plants so he doesnt bump into the walls too much. too much collision will cause the tip of the lower jaw to become raw, it might even damage the jaw and break it! Also constant rubbing and abrasion against the side of the tank will cause the barbels to wear away, and not you have an ugly aro. But dont fret because they will grow back. Also DIM THE LIGHTS!! aromwana are really sensitive and skittish so the slightest movements will send them off flying. weigh down your lid and never underestimate what an aro can and cannot jump through. keep your lid COMPLETLY covered. Also putting some other semi aggressive fish in the tank or fish that swim around alot will get him used to constant movement, and will in time calm him down. My suggestion is getting a pangasius catfish. they grow to equal sizes and the pangasius will never punk on him and is a constant swimmer. plus what ever the arowana leaves behind the catfish will most of the time fish off the left overs. enjoy your dragon, they are by far the most majestic of fish.

glad to hear your aro is doing better, i think it just took its time adjusting to its new home, some fish handle stress of moving tanks better than others. i have 1 that likes to sit on the bottom for a few days everytime i bag him.

So I made some changes to the tank today I picked up some plants from the pet store that I attached plants around the top corners so they have places to hide and no longer see people bursting through the door anymore. So far I think its great and may buy more plants if necessary. Also I changed the direction in which my filter discharged; Before I had it so it pushed water across the surface of the tank so it could stir up the water on the surface. now there is very little current in the tank. I was wondering if it would be necessary to get some air stones in the tank to get more oxygen circulating in the tank now. Thanks in advance.

i like foam filters run on air pumps and bubble walls for such things. it never hurts to add air bubbles to a tank. when my arowana were young they liked to play in the bubbles too..

I have a foam filter its been used got it when I bought the tank and has been sitting outside for awhile. Is it still ok to be used?

the hard part of the filter is still just fine, but you should get a new piece of foam and probably a new air stone.

Tank looks great! Aeration never hurts a tank and you did a good thing by moving the current off the top of the water. I have my canister filter push in one direction with has a decent current on one side of my tank and completely still on the other. My arowana knows the still surface side is his and the clown loaches know the current side is theirs. :)
