Stand pipes are to silence the drains, which unless you have a large waterfall past the overflow are the main cause of noise.

how do i quiet down my overflow ?

Although these don't totally silence it, a PVC cap balanced on a frame to allow water free flow helps some.
I have used screen caps, then placed a PVC cap on top.
The pics above, are on a standpipe, in a bottom drilled tank.

well I ended up making a piece to cover the top of the overflow box out of plexi glass as well as added some air line in the drains and its as quiet as a mouse 
I use Durso pipes and they make it completely silent. Here is a link. http://www.dursostandpipes.com/

I put a piece of air hose in my drain pipe and it made no difference at all.. Does that only work on the H.O.B. overflow box's??
Ya sometimes you need to move the air line around a little bit mine didn't go silent right away, after a bit of moving it around in theree and such it was pretty qiuet
