How do I reduce the flow rate of my HOB filters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The water level makes a huge difference in the current in the tank. You want the flow to go across the top of the water surface and not immediately down into the water column.

You can also attach a coarse sponge to the out flow water fall. So that the out going water flows thru it. I poke a small hole in each side of the spill way and use fishing line and a sewing needle to attach another ac110 sponge cut in half long ways. I use this on a 10g tank and it works well.

hopefully he wont mind me stepping in for him, but yes you can do that, but it hardly changes the flow rate at all really.

for your AC110s (i have AC70s, i feel your pain), the only thing i know to tell you is to make sure your water level is as close to the waterfall/output as possible. that'll make it the most quiet and reduce the waterflow the most.

otherwise, if you find something out that works good for your AC filters, PLEASE drop me a message telling me unless i stop before it.

goodluck!

edit: dunno much about dats, but is there any specific reason your tank is about 400-500% over filtered? :nilly:

I tried moving the intake tube but it's still a pretty strong current that comes out of the filter. I'll try moving up the water level higher. It's usually at a few inches below the filter outflow. My water is at 85-86 degrees and it usually evaporates pretty fast.

I have it overfiltered because I have a tank full of baby Indonesian Tiger datnoids and I read that they need super clean water. So I put on so many strong filters. The bad part about that is that the current is so strong that they look like they're moving their fins really fast just to stay still.

I tried attaching a sponge with a rubber band and it looks like it'll stay put. Thanks for the sponge suggestion. The water level and sponge makes the filters quieter too.

if your water is usually a few inches down then this is causing your problem, at least with the Aquaclears.

it will disappear when you fill the tank up. people run way oversized AC's on very small tanks and the reason they can is that when the level is kept topped up, the disturbance is very little.
