Right now I use well water to rinse my filters, so there's no type of chemicals in my water. I was wondering when I rinse them with city water, what I should do to make sure there is no chlorine or chlorimine or anything else the water company's put in the water, left on my filters after I rinse them

Can I use a bucket with water and prime to just dip them in before I put them back in the filter after I clean them??? I don't want to take the chance of killing off any of my benificial bacteria in my filter or on the bio-wheels when I put the pad's back in.

Use the tank water you are taking out...

:iagree:

just rinse them in a bucket of water from a water change.

I fill up a 5gal bucket and use that to rinse filter media.

I take out a gallon of water and rinse my filter pads in that, then repeat once the water has become murky. I then proceed to do the usual water change.

A little chorine or chloramine is not a big deal. We top off with city water at the store, with no conditioner.

To answer your question, yes you can use tap water after its treated with prime or something similar.

But i would do what everyone above me has mentioned.

Topping off is fine, but cleaning your filter media with pure tap water is pretty risky IMO.

It is best to clean media with water from your tank, but there are alternatives.
tap water- condition it and put the amount you need in a bucket/tupperware and clean the media-
You could also use distilled water, RO/uv water, or bottled water if your city water is heavily chlorinated. I personally use my well water which is great quality but a little hard. Most important thing to remember is to keep the cleaning water at or around the same temp as in the tank, huge temperature differences can possibly kill your beneficial bacteria.

I clean mine in city tap water, then in a big bowl I'll drop in the filters in water conditioned with AmQuel+ for a few moments to neutralize the chlorimines. Back in to the filter it goes. No problems in all the time I have done it this way.
